On the Leesh Productions July 2013 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

We've had a super busy month over here at On the Leesh.  What You Can Do has continued our summer campaigns honoring our oceans from coast to coast, featuring simple ideas on how to protect our oceans based on interviews with The Parker Manatee Aquarium at The South Florida Museum and The Monterey Bay Aquarium.

On July 20th, we held an event - "Plastics Art for a Healthy Ocean" at the Bushwick Coffee House in Brooklyn. We asked artists to create works of art on repurposed plastic.  Thanks to everyone who made the event a huge success!

And we're incredibly excited to announce that our video - Snooty: Senior and Loving was selected by MSN to run on their home page.  Major congratulations to Snooty the Manatee for inspiring all of us, and a tremendous thank you to Marilyn Margold, the South Florida Museum and everyone involved in making this video a success!

Hope you're all staying cool in this heat!
The On the Leesh Team

This month, we were inspired by Sarah-Mae Nelson of the  The Monterey Bay Aquarium.  Her commitment to our oceans inspired her to go plastic free for an entire year.  Watch this video to find more about her experience.  Wanna follow in Sarah's footsteps? Don't worry, you don't have to give up all plastic products for the year! Sarah-Mae offers simple one minute ideas on how you can make a difference.

To honor our ocean's we produced an event called "Plastic Art for a Healthy Ocean."  Held on July 20th at the Bushwick Coffee House in Brooklyn, we asked artists to submit works of art on recycled plastic.  Our winner, Courtney Miller, was awarded a gift pack from Celebritay.  We also made donations in her name to The Monterey Bay Aquarium and The Parker Manatee Aquarium.  The event featured a charity concert with performances by Kntrlr, Janet LaBelle and The Sea Monsters. Thank you to everyone who made the night a huge success!

July 19th marked the 65th Birthday of Snooty the Manatee! Snooty has
lived longer than any manatee and has allowed scientists to learn so much about these gentle giants.  The Parker Manatee Aquarium threw him a huge birthday bash, and the whole community came out to honor him. I mean, just take a peak at his cake!  We're passionate about spreading the word about Snooty over here, so the best gift we could give this guy, is having his video featured on MSN. Join us in wishing the big man all the best in the coming year, and check out this video to learn more about Snooty's work in helping other manatees.

Thanks to everyone for making our continued oceans campaign, a success as well as everyone who got involved in the conversation on Facebook.  Be sure to subscribe to us on YouTube.

UP NEXT

As we wind down the Summer, we'll offer more one minute ways to help the health of our oceans and all the creatures living within them.

Coming up in September we will devote an entire month to the ideas of anti-bullying and spreading kindness and compassion.  We're teaming up with the Anti Defamation League, and we will offer simple one minute ways to combat the issue of cyber-bullying.   Last September, our campaign with Rachel's Challenge raised 10,000 acts of kindness, so this year we're re-teaming for our second annual "Kindness Week." Stay tuned.

Be sure to write in and share your ideas on how to protect our oceans!

Plastic Trash Inspires Art and Music in Brooklyn

July 18, 2013 – New York, NY – Though no one wants to encounter trash at the ocean or on the beach, plastic inspires art and music this Saturday at the “Plastic Art for a Healthy Ocean” event. For a contest hosted by the What You Can Do web and TV series, artists submitted 2D or 3D ocean-inspired pieces using primarily plastics and other mixed media. What You Can Do celebrates the oceans this summer, featuring ideas to help issues such as overfishing, pollution and wildlife preservation in new episodes. The series also spotlights a woman inspired to live plastic free by a Laysian albatross at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in videos "Plastic Free for a Year" and "Bird is the Word…For Going Plastic Free."

The “Plastic Art for a Healthy Ocean” contest culminates in a night of art and live music at the Bushwick Coffee House in Brooklyn, New York this Saturday, July 20th at 7:30 pm. The What You Can Do team will announce the winner of a $100 cash prize for their artwork, along with a matching donation to an ocean conservation charity. The winner will also receive a gift basket and gift certificate from CeleBritAy, a Brooklyn based company that offers natural health and beauty goods for men and women in an environmentally friendly fashion. The evening will kick off at 7:30 pm with an exhibit of submitted art work, followed by live music from the Sea MonstersKNTRLR and Janet LaBelle at 9pm. Admission is free at 7:30 pm and will be $10 starting at 9pm.

“After visiting experts at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California and Parker Manatee Aquarium in Bradenton, Florida, we discovered small changes can make a big difference for our oceans,” shared Alicia Arinella, What You Can Do executive producer. “We can’t wait to see the creativity inspired by passion to preserve our oceans with the ‘Plastic Art for a Healthy Ocean’ contest and event.”
